Character OptionsA guide to creating a character: names, passwords, gender, races, and careers.
Experts who have mudded before can skip ahead to the races and careers. Those new to muds should start at the top.
How to create a character
When you first connect you get to choose a few things. The first, of course, is your name. It can be anything you want, but avoid names that are excessively long — shorter names are easier to type. You can also give yourself a nickname once online, so a long name need not slow you down.
Once a name is chosen, you are asked to select a password. Choose it carefully, avoiding obvious words and things that can be easily guessed. A good password is one that makes no sense at a glance but means something to you, or that includes a number. Keep it secret: if someone knows it they can ruin your character, your reputation, or get you killed.
Next, decide whether to play a female or a male character. Since it is a game, you can pretend to be whatever you want.
Then choose a species, more commonly known as a race. This is the hardest part: the race you choose limits which careers you can select later, so keep your intended career in mind.
Races
These are the races available when you create a character. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so choose wisely. See the full race details for sizes, gains, and ability modifiers.
- Human: Average. Fewer racial hatreds than other races.
- Elven: Taller. More movement. More mana. Numerous racial hatreds.
- Dwarven: Shorter. Less movement. Heals fast. Infravision.
- Troll: Large, clumsy, not very bright, strong, heals fast and infravision.
- Half-elf: Use your imagination and imagine half elf and half human.
- Sprite: Short. More movement. Heals faster. High dexterity.
- Hobbit: Average, with a little less movement.
- Drow: More movement. More mana. Infravision.
- Gnome: Average.
Careers
Careers, also known as classes, are limited by the race you choose, but for the most part you can pick any of them. In many cases you can be multi-class and hold more than one career, up to a combination of three. See the full career descriptions for detail.
- Mage: Strong spell caster. Weak fighter.
- Cleric: Healing spells. Okay fighter.
- Warrior: A general fighter.
- Thief: Okay fighter. Thievery. Stealth skills.
- Paladin: Good alignment. Good fighter. Some cleric magic.
- Anti-Paladin: Evil alignment. Mix of mage/warrior with some thief/cleric.
- Ranger: Good fighter. Some druid magic.
- Druid: Uses nature magic. Okay fighter.
- Barbarian: Best fighter. Can't use magic items.
- Illusionist: Like a mage, but with a bend toward illusion magic.
